Recessed lighting installation, also called can lighting, means installing light fixtures that sit flush within the ceiling rather than mounted on the surface, giving rooms a clean, modern look without visible fixtures taking up visual space. This is popular for kitchens, living rooms, and any space where homeowners want even, unobtrusive lighting rather than a single central fixture.
This is worth considering if you're renovating a room and want a lighting upgrade that looks clean and modern, if your current lighting setup is a single central fixture that leaves parts of the room dim, if you're finishing a basement or other space that needs lighting planned from scratch, or if you simply want to update outdated lighting with something that adds real value and a more finished look to the space.
We start with a lighting plan for the room, since recessed lighting placement matters for even coverage – too few or poorly placed cans leave dark spots, while a well-planned layout lights the whole space evenly. Installation in an existing ceiling means cutting openings at each fixture location, running wiring through the ceiling cavity to connect each can to the switch, and installing the housing and trim for each fixture. This is more involved when working with a finished ceiling versus open framing during a renovation, since we're working carefully around existing insulation and structure. We test all fixtures on the circuit and confirm even light distribution before finishing.
Cost depends on the number of fixtures being installed, ceiling accessibility, and whether we're working with open framing or need to cut into a finished ceiling. Homes in Gotham, WI with insulated attics above the installation area sometimes need IC-rated fixtures specifically designed to safely contact insulation, which we'll factor into the recommendation.
